I still don’t get it.
How does one “give” miles? Or steal them?

The time spent eating... is time not hiking.

This makes absolutely no sense, even as a joke. And this group of people is spending over a thousand bucks each year for a joke that makes no sense? Something doesn't add up. Or maybe people are just crazy.

It's a bit weird, but the "diner" folks are having fun and the hikers get fed, so no harm I guess.

The PCT has become such a circus in recent years that I've lost all interest in ever doing it. If you want a burger there are plenty of local economies to help out along this completely optional route.

I once shared a tent site with a thru-hiker who was out of food, en route to his distant cache.
"Can I pour you a drink?" I asked.
<palpable silence.>
"What was that?"
"I've got some 150 proof rum and an extra Cliff bar. Can I pour you a drink?"
"That's what I thought you said, but I thought it was too good to be true."
