I've been considering some comms possibilities for when I separate with my hiking partner.

Currently I have a decent pair of 2-way radios and of course a cellphone when it has service.

I've been thinking about investing in an older pair of garmin rinos, which would allow two people to share locations in addition to being 2-way radios.

However, I recently heard about a device called a GoTenna Mesh which will pair with your cellphone and then send texts, location via a smartphone app.  Does anyone have experience with these, is the range sufficient?

There have been spots where I couldn't hear my partner shouting. I'm not sure whistles would be so reliable unless the frequency gets around corners better.

The more I look, the more products I see.  Motorola has a fancy pair of talkabouts called t800 which can pair with your phone to send texts and coordinates.  There are also GoTenna Mesh competitors such as the radacat, which looks very similar.

Shouting generates about 70db, a good emergency whistle around 80db , which translates to a ten fold increase in energy, which triples the range.   A big plus of a whistle is it doesn't get hoarse.

Independent of any electronic gadgets,  an emergency whistle attached to the shoulder strap is a useful tool.

I keep a whistle attached to my bag for emergencies but obviously I'm looking for something more sophisticated.
