Day 5 updated!
Lakes&Summits wrote: | Fabulous pics and description. I was there Aug 8-15, but started at Green River Lakes and came out Big Sandy just as you were heading in!
It was epic. Fun to see some of the places you hit that we missed. But it's all amazing... |
That's awesome!! Which areas did you hit that we missed?

We just got back from 6 days in the Winds and also did the same route as you across Alpine Lakes Basin, over Alpine Lakes Pass and Indian Pass.
Glad to see that it wasn't just us who hated the miles of boulder hopping! That third lake especially was a pain in the butt to skirt around and took way longer than anticipated. The Knifepoint Glacier and its easy travel was definitely the highlight of the day.

You probably exceeded your limit of landscape beauty
Love the uncertainty in the narrative, and the DIY route/food. Inspirational.

Am I right that more is coming? As of Day 7 you're still in the alpine wilderness! Such awesome eye candy!

Day 8 is uploaded, which closes out this TR. Not many pictures from day 8 because I was thinking about that post-hike burger the whole time .
Soon you'll finally be able to log on to NWHikers and not see this TR at the top of the list because it is officially done
On a related note, I'll be presenting a slideshow on this trip at NWPeaks Brewery in Ballard next Monday, September 23. The facebook event is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/526599728114743 and I think the brewery wants people to RSVP using the eventbrite ticketing system for room capacity reasons.
Thanks everyone for reading and commenting!

Fantastic trip report, thank you so much for posting! I am planning a high traverse for this summer and, like you, Mt. Hooker without backtracking is a must for me. Unlike you, I am attempting a north to south route. I was wondering whether you had any insight into descending from "Irish Pass" into the more northerly basin (which you mentioned you had wished you ascended). I can't find anyone else on the web who has made that descent so any info/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

From what I remember, it looked totally doable and no worse than Bonney Pass which is chossier compared to the larger boulders here. It's hard to remember if we got a good look at the lowest section of that slope, but I still think it would go. The snowfield shown on the map is mostly gone too. Also, the bonneville traverse was tedious.
Keep in mind that you're passing through a small corner of reservation land here

Absolutely fabulous trip report.
Brought back some awesome memories.
Spent 10 days rock climbing in the Winds 25 years ago......We saw 10 people the whole time we were there. Fell so in love with the wildness of the Winds.
Hope to get back there this Fall.
Thanks so much.
