The Center Mountain Trail, a continuation of the Chancellor / Canyon Creek Trail #754, links the historic mining town of Chancellor to Sky Pilot Pass in a distance of about 7 miles.

Trail 754 is on Mike's list of abandoned Pasayten Wilderness trail restoration projects and he's already done a great deal of restoration work on the segment linking SR 20 to Chancellor.

I've hiked this and the CMT segment many times and think that trail 754 should have a high priority for restoration. One reason is that it is a potentially life saving escape route from the popular Pacific Crest Trail in the event of wildfire entrapment. Consider that northern segment of the PCT sees a particularly high volume of traffic during peak fire season when PCT hikers are completing their treks to the Canadian border.

Mike recruited me, Marty, Joe, Peter, Dave and Pam to do saw and trailbed work to begin restoring the CMT trail. (Don H was supposed to be part of our merry crew, but he cleverly broke a rib while mountain biking the Cedar Creek trail with his demented band of quasi-suicidal mountain bikers).

The first leg of the CMT parallels Canyon Creek, gaining and losing perhaps 200' of elevation. The last section of this initial leg featured a lot of flood damage, deadfall and brush. It is dramatically better now.

At 0.9 miles , the trail crosses the North Fork of Canyon Creek, and then switchbacks up the Southern toe of Center Mountain, gaining about 3400' to reach attractive meadows and exceptional vistas. Many large trees have come down on the initial ~3 miles of this section.

The first 1.2 or so miles of the CMT are outside the wildnerness boundary while the remainder is crosscut territory. Our group of very hard working oddballs cleared the trail to the 4300' level.

Much work remains.

Question: Flickr has changed its terms of service such that I am looking for an alternative photo hosting site. Suggestions are welcomed.

Edit: Mike reminded me to let everyone know that there's still a CFR trail closure notice for the Chancellor / Canyon Creek trail. The trail has been so greatly improved that we're hoping this notice will come down soon.

Wow.

I have put in my long term notes that trail has been abandoned.  I believe the Center mountain trail is about 3 miles less to Holman Pass from Chancellor rather than utilizing PCT from near Slate Peak.  Another option.

I gotta now take this abandoned trail off the list!!!

You guys rock!

Google photos.  You'll need to add the photos to a shareable album (e.g. nwhikers), paste the share link in the pics box here, then click the pics button. It's not as robust as flickr but I find it easier since my phone automatically uploads all my photos to google photos anyway.

Archerbrown -- A knowledgeable friend also thinks it's Hericium. Thanks for the suggestion!

Tom and Brushbuffalo: I'm changing to google photos; thanks for that info!
