My most interesting bull elk encounter was about ten years ago while camped at Dewey Lake in late September.   Just after dark, a bull wandered into the meadow between me and the lake and started bugling.  This was exciting!  However, at 2 am he was still there, still bugling loudly, and I was beginning to have serious thoughts about elk stew!

I give elk a wide berth any time of year--they are best enjoyed from a distance.

I find even the cows acting agitated this time of year. I keep an eye out for them and skirt around the whole lot.

I got to hear some unique bugling the other day in a canyon on the Potlatch River in North Idaho. Kind of eerie and childlike at the same time.
