Thought I'd mix it up and try to capture some desert animals on my wildlife cameras. I've been concentrating on forest & wooded areas and the animals captured this summer on those cameras, in those areas, have become fairly predictable. So off I went to the steep slopes of the Eastern Washington scrublands.
I went to a area that I know holds wildlife. A specific type. Braided game trails criss-crossing the treeless mountain side. Glassing the area with my binoculars I found a spot I liked. Surveying the terrain, I said to myself, "looks like prime predator ambush habitat." Lots of rock and cliff benches to launch an attack. Water was close. I was confident that with this much prey around, there has got to be predators in the vicinity. I hiked in 2 miles and found a lonely tree close to some water. I set up there and let the camera sit for about 3 weeks.
Captured exactly what I was targeting
It's fun to scout & study a area. Scan the area via Google Earth and come up with a strategic plan.
Cool when the plan comes together
Bachelor group with 3 different mature rams coming to the water for a afternoon drink
Mountain Lion also quenching it's thirst

Ooh, I’m so jealous! I just got my camera and at least I got a bobcat on it. I’d love to see a cougar on my camera.

Love these posts..thanks for views not commonly seen. PS on my way back from Yakima over Chinook p..a small group of big horn sheep came running off the hill to cross the highway. Was wonderful to see them and hope they remain safe..

Maybe start a thread for trail cams? This could be a very fun thread. I am totally hooked.

I second the motion.
I finally ordered my first camera today but although I'm not expecting to capture bears or cougar ( oh my!), who knows? They are around, even in my area just 7 miles from the center of Bham.

I sent a email message to the WDFW Big Horn Sheep biologist.
I asked a couple of questions... ( thought I'd share )
"Does WDFW have any statistics on sheep predation from lions?"
"Also, I noticed #33 with ear tag and gps collar? Is that individual a adolescent ram. I couldn't quite tell"
Answer
"There are currently 7 GPS-collared sheep in the Chelan Butte, only one of which is a ram. Cougars are a natural predator of bighorn sheep, and ewes and lambs are most susceptible to predation. While it’s a small sample size, of the 10 sheep we collared this year 2 of them have been cougar-related mortalities. Of all the herds we have in Washington excessive predation isn’t a cause for concern"
20%! That sounds like a high predation rate to me for the Chelan Butte herd
