Was having a hard time settling on any summit objectives this weekend, so was glad when Fletcher asked if I was interested in joining on a couple T200 peaks along the Carne high route Saturday. Neil, Jake, Fletcher, and myself met at Cole's Corner by 6 and carpooled up the Chiwawa. The road isn't terrible, but high clearance is recommended. The four of us were on trail by 8:00 and made quick work up to Carne Basin. Larches are at least a couple weeks from being worth a trip for the colors. High hunt is in full swing, and we saw plenty of activity from hunters.
Heading up Carne Clark, Buck, & Glacier Chiwawa drainage
Fletcher took a classic mountain nap at the pass above the basin while the 3 of us made the quick jaunt up to the high point of Carne. Speaking of, is it pronounced carn, carn-a, or carn-ee?

From the top we had great views for our next two summits. The weather was looking good, and the stoke was high. We descended the Rock Cr trail a short bit then left it at an obvious ridge. Stayed on the ridge for a couple hundred yards then dropped into the basin below.

From there we made a strait line toward Chilly's summit block. There is an easy class 2 gully up the summit block to climbers left. Views were spectacular in all directions.

Enjoyed a summit beer while debated the route to Ice Box. Try staying high on the ridge which looked to be cumbersome w/ some class 5 involved, or descend several hundred feet and traverse over below the summit. We chose the 2nd option, but it involved at least a full mile of annoying scree traversing.

After the traverse our group ascended boulders and loose pumice fields for 1,000' to the top. Views of Maude and Ice Lakes were spectacular from our perch. Fletcher enjoyed his 2nd nap of the day on the summit.

We thought about descending Box Creek, but figured it would be easier to head back over Carne and enjoy the trail out

Finished the day with a burger and beers at The Squirrel Tree. Much better food and better beer options than the 59'er. 14 miles w/ 6,600' gained. Another great day in the mountains!!!

Good looking trip. Too bad the larches haven't changed yet....of course that would have probably meant more masses to deal with, at least for Carne (I believe it's pronounced Carn...but someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I found that the ridge route went surprisingly fun and kept at Class 3 if incorporating a couple short bypass traverses. Perhaps that is what you did, as you regularly climb unroped on harder things than I?

All printed references seem to say "karn" . . . but in the field . . . not everyone looks up how to pronounce it, and practice it before heading out . . .
Mountaineers page says it is pronounced karn (rather than the Spanish kar-nay)
The wiki page for Albert Hale Sylvester says Carne Mtn. was named after the English clergyman W. Stanely Carnes (but no "s" on the mtn. name). (Stanely is a weird spelling . . . of Stanley?)
Summitpost cites that Fred Beckey said "karn".
So it's English. Not Spanish.
My experience is: be ready for both pronunciations.

Pronounce it however you like. Just not carn-ee. Those are the guys who work at circuses.
Thanks for the report, I've been wondering what the colors are like out there now. The fresh snow on Maude etc. looks cool.

the oracle has spoken:
Quote: | Per Robert Hitchman’s Place Names of Washington. “Carne Mountain, with an elevation of 7,074 feet is on a ridge between Phelps and Ice creeks near the headwaters of the Entiat River in northwest Chelan County. It has been used as a Forest Service lookout. In 1915, it was named by U.S. Forest Supervisor A. H. Sylvester for W. Stanley Carnes, an English clergyman.”
Since Carne is a misspelling of Carnes, there may be no “right” way to pronounce it. |
the oracle confirms that chilly and carne are related. therefore, correct pronunciation = carn-ee

Ow my freakin ears! (You're a Simpsons fan right?) Car-nay, please. Don't ever let a Spanish-speaking person catch you saying carn-ee.
Anyway it's carn (<- that's me after getting punched in the face I suppose)

Should rename maude queso peak. Cause we all know the queso dominates the chili in chili con queso. It's more like queso con chili, least in the tostitos, et al brands you see at the store. And maude is the big cheese on the ridge up there.
