Hey folks, Looking to tap into your wealth of experience. A few of us are heading up to Cutthroat Pass tomorrow and are probably going to do it as a point-to-point with two cars. I haven't been on the trail before. Do you recommend we start at the Cutthroat Pass TH and end at the Rainy Pass TH or vise versa? Thanks in advance for your input!

I would start at the Cutthroat TH. The scenery is a little better on that side and I feel like most people enjoy it more in the beginning of a hike than towards the end.

I would actually suggest starting at Rainy. There's just something about hiking up through that larch forest below the pass with the anticipation of the amazing view at the end.

I've only ever been up the Rainy Pass side - I love the way it ascends to the pass through the larch forest as fourteen410 mentioned. Also, by starting at Rainy you end at a lower elevation at the Cutthroat TH.

I've done it as a ski tour starting at Rainy. Skiing down the eastside is steeper and more interesting. But if your knees are getting old and cranking, going up the steep side and down the gentle side has some merit.

When those views come in to play and you're crushin' those peaks and getting up to where you're towering above those lower lakes its the real deal.

I've done it on a MTB (Cutthroat TH to the pass and back), can't imagine doing it in skis. I mean I can imagine, but there are a lot of trees! My hat's off to you.
