I've made trips to a few of Rainier's satellite peaks over the years, but this morning's visit to the summit of Goat Island Mountain was by far the most amazing! The weather was perfect and the route is positioned really close to the action...nothing but grabber views all morning. Here are some snaps. I've kept 'em kinda big. Sorry for slow loads...
First glimpse of the citadel of Little Tahoma (from approach trail). ...another, taken from Frying Pan Creek. Things really start to open up as you move along the broad, easy ridge... A detail of the crevassed dome... ...pulling back. The upper ridge is more filled-in, but still very walkable without flotation (see steps)... Fair warning: you will get suckered at least three times by false summits, but do press on--the final high point is worth the effort. Taking a rearward glance at the approach creek and meadows... What's a visit to Goat Island without...GOATZ! Popping up above a rise, I startled a herd. They kindly posed for some snaps before disappearing down a gully. goatz! From near the summit... From the true summit, you can look across the valley and see roads and rec areas. I'm not sure which one this is, but I had fun playing with the zoom. These "point 'n' click" cameras are getting better all the time... EXTREME ZOOM! hahaha Crevasse details... The fracture patterns are fascinating... Isn't the Ingraham Flats route in this mess somewhere? One more... Spotted some kind of massive sink hole on a lower moraine...wonder what's at the bottom of that horrible abyss...
So...fantastic weather, perfect route, highly recommended. BTW, last week I also did a REALLY fun geological field trip to Central and Eastern Washington. I'm sorting through the snaps and will push 'em up sometime in the next week. Look forward to the appearance of coulees, desert plants, and a reptile that Wikipedia describes as "non-venomous but occasionally aggressive." Ooooh!

Isn't that just a crevasse, albeit a circular one? Maybe a hot spot under there that's melted out a hole...

Sweet pics!
That's gotta be Sunrise area that you're zoomed in on w/ the buildings and roads I think.

GaliWalker: Hm, yeah, circular crevasse--rescue would be tricky. If I had a drone, it would be cool to fly it into the hole.
olderthanIusedtobe: OK, yeah...Sunrise. Yep, now I remember. I rode my bike up there once. Thx!
Nickel: You gotta get up that cone! It'll be completely eroded in ~1.5 Million years.
