I noticed this mailbox on a tree (along with fresh private property signs) on one of the last properties before the Monte bridge. Does anyone know if there was USPS delivery out here before the washout in the 80's? Or is it just a joke by the property owner? Seems like it would be quite a ways for the mailman to go considering their last stops are(were) probably in Silverton.

Back when there was a cleanup of the mine tailings in the river a couple of years ago (summer of 2014?-ish) a new road was built to the properties on the north side of the Sauk. It's only open to property owners I believe, and maybe for the Monte Cristo restoration group. If the mailbox is legit, maybe the USPS uses that road?

USPS would not deliver mail there now; the road is for authorized vehicles only. I don’t know about mail delivery in the past when the county road was open, but I wonder if the box was for MCPA flyers and other news of the community…

I may be wrong, but I think USPS postal regulations would require that box to be hung much lower than it appears to be.

Yah, forgot about that - when Jim and I went to Monte Cristo this summer, we noticed that, and figured it was up high for those who use their cabins in winter when the snow is yay-deep.

Generally, mail boxes that high are reserved for air mail.

No, no no don't even think that.   Of course mail is delivered to Mailbox pk.  DUH!   Why do you think there’s a mailbox there?   It’s not for fun you know......

Too funny !

Well that explains why I haven’t seen a mailman up there.   Oh wait,  I haven’t hiked there for a while.....

Some of those residents are kinda reclusive.  It might be a neighborhood communication system; as in, "don't come and knock at the door unannounced, just leave a note in my mailbox, with the flag up".   tongue.gif
