I have a garmin 64st and have read about maps exclusive to specific trails, PCT, PNT, CDT, AT, that include way pionts to water sources, campgrounds. I plan to section Hike some of these trails, so I am curious where they are available and if anyone has used them, or am I just dreaming?

I don’t know myself, but one place I would ask is Pacific Crest Trail Association.

When I grow up I wanna play.

PNW trails association puts out maps. I believe they update each year. Presumably too early for 2020 edition.

https://blackwoodspress.com/pacific-crest-trail/maps/atlas/ If you buy one of the atlases, you can download a GPX file with track and waypoints (including water locations, etc) for the atlas you purchased.

I haven't used them, but I've heard of lots of people using Halfmile's maps. It looks like they have GPS data you can download which appears to include waypoints. https://www.pctmap.net/gps/

I've used Halfmile's maps, both paper and with the accompanying waypoints and liked them a lot. It says on his web site that he used a high end surveyors' GPS to create them, so they should be really accurate. However, he may have stopped updating them. It should say on his web site.

National Geographic has new large segment maps for each of PCT, AT, and CDT.

I bought the paper Atlas for the Washington section (back when it was sold separately from Oregon) and I'm pretty happy with it. It is not the only map I use, but it is quite handy for distances to water, or distances between trail junctions, camps, etc. It wouldn't stake my life on it, but in my experience it has been quite accurate.

Cool, good info here! up.gif I bought the whole AT set only to find out I only needed shelter journals, my ears and maybe was it Wingfoots book 20+ years ago. These days Google maps? The PCT, follow the leader. For the CDT we used a hiker friend's maps, Johnathan his maps were helpful but pages out of a Gazetteer would work as well if highlighted before hand with alt routes noted. Important in case of snow or fires. Good old maps are important though. Dry and used properly you learn more than the route on a lonely night before bed in the bag.
