I went hiking on the beach along Puget Sound a few weeks ago, and had the opportunity to film these huge beds of sand dollars. The combination of low tide and remarkably calm water enabled me to capture the the beautiful mosaic of life that covers the ocean floor like a quilt.

Live ones? This video marks the first time I've ever seen a live Sand Dollar. Previously, I'd only ever seen their shells on ocean beaches. It never occurred to me that they might live in large colonies in shallow water.

I haven't looked in many years, but there used to be "colonies" of live sand dollars within Seattle city limits. Far and few between, and not sitting out exposed as yours were in the pictures, but there nevertheless. Hope they are still thriving.

I feel lucky to have seen a similar swarm of Sand Dollars scuba diving near Hornby Island BC in search of Six-Gill sharks many years ago. Thanks for the excellent video; showed it to my grand twins and they were fascinated!

Interesting, I was reading that they are apparently really good for improving water quality, so the more of them cleaning the water near the big city the better!

That sounds like an amazing experience! I'd love to go scuba diving in the Salish Sea some day. I'm glad your grand twins enjoyed the video!

I didn't know they are fuzzy when they're alive! The Fuzzy Sand Dollars. Sounds like a 60's combo band.

There is a beach on Vancouver Island in Clayoquot Sound known informally as "Sand Dollar Beach". Covered with Sand Dollars!
