I wasn't carrying an overnight pack, but I don't recall the overland crossing at Hole in Wall being too difficult. That was several years ago, maybe it's deteriorated.

Maybe you caught it low tide?
The one time I went, several years ago (2006), I was able to go through and back just in the nick of time, since the tide was rolling in:

What I'm referring to isn't going thru the Hole at all. It's just east, probably always above the tide line. Kind of a muddy little chute, can't remember if there is a rope in place there. Definitely not one of those rope ladders though. Climb about 20 or 30 feet up onto a little bluff, then immediately back down the other side.

Maybe I'm a whimp, but it looked like a pain in the ass to me. I mean, not like horrific, but with a heavy pack...not fun. And I had a heavier than usual pack, since it's such a short hike. Like "I think I'll bring my ukulele" heavy
