China Lake Nature Area - 11-22-19 Low elevation urban dayhike. Total trail length: 1½-2 mi. (?). Max elevation gain: 100 ft. The main entrance and parking lot are at 1811 South 19th Street, at South 19th & Shirley. (South 19th between Orchard and Pearl is a 30 mph zone and is patrolled by the police of the City of Fircrest, a small municipality notorious for radar traps.) There is also an access point at the north end at South 13th & Winnifred. Just over five years have gone by since my last visit to the China Lake Nature Area, and I figured it was time to pay another visit. There's a map and some historical information about the Park in the previous report.

I went around the lake in a counterclockwise direction, and stopped to take a few photos from vantage points where the lake is visible.

At the south end of the lake is a rather interesting request to the public asking for their help in creating a visual record of the progression of the Park's development:

Hopefully their new plantings of native flora will thrive and help to get the area back to its original state.

From what I have been able to glean from my communications with MetroParksTacoma, they are working in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transporation (which owns a strip along the eastern border of the Park) to address the issue of homeless encampments. Although I did not have time to wander around up-slope on the spider web of trails on the Park's eastern edge, the main trail and the area immediately around the lake appeared to be well taken care of and free of the sort of garbage dumping one will find in some other areas. Thanks to Mr. Azinger and his crew for their efforts to assure this little gem remains a clean and safe area for pubic recreation. -BK up.gif
