I like the Inreach. I keep it in "Suspended" during the months I'm not using it - so I don't pay for it - and then activate it for a month whenever I go out.
It works well. I always just do a couple test SMS and emails prior to departing, and then of course when I'm out backpacking I will use it to communicate with people. My Alaska friend was impressed with it last time we were out camping. He had never used one before, and he was enjoying the ability to send and receive texts to his girlfriend.
Definitely a worthwhile device. Well worth the price and the service subscription, in my opinion.
