then you just Claim to b day hiking....oops i got caught out overnight  over-estimated my abilities ect....(though this may not work for 2 full nights, especially if the rangers acutuallly communicate) or you see the same rangers after 2 nights...

SAFETY FIRST!! MY SURVIVAL TRUMPS ALL THE DAM RULES.....SORRY FOR THE MISS CALCULATION of my ability to day hiki the whole route....

there are better short x-c routes to lakes...or just go the WIND RIVER RANGE!!

They will still fine you.

I think it's really inconsiderate and telling the way some of people here who have been to the Enchantments, some multiple times, down play it as if its beneath them.

It's completely reasonable for someone who hasnt been there to want to go and it absolutely is kind of a "right of passage" trip.

Hmmn I still am attempting to get my core permits for the chants. No shame. It's just something I would like to experience at least 1 time. I imagine most of those who are to elite would probably feel the same way if they had never been.

What you have to understand here is that these WA H&C types don't go to the Enchantments to see any of the scenery. They only go due to the high relevancy of the place in many social circles. It looks competitive in a resume or photo log when you boast tent pics in the Core Zone.

Some are known to even lug a tent up there and set it up just for the pic! In certain social circles, a Core Zone permit will skyrocket someone right up the ladder. These people are so internally focused on this status-y, material objective that they fail to notice any of the scenery while they are there. And others are so giddy with the notion of boasting those tent pics in The Core to their social circles that they run right down the trail, attempting to exit fast as possible because they can't WAIT to post.

I've even heard of guys selling pics for a pretty penny to people with Core permits who would rather just skip the hike entirely and post a picture, passing it off as their own. Once you get the permit, the hike itself just becomes chore to "prove it".

What I'm getting at is that these types should not be allowed to enter the Core Zone! They do not have the artistic eye required to fully appreciate the place!

Nah -- I'm sure those folks have the ultimate outdoorsy socialist media accessory -- a satellite data link.   Nothing raises your SM cred quicker than posting from a location not covered by Verizon.

Hmmm.  Anybody want to purchase some summit pics from Little Annapurna?

People can get joy from more than one thing. Maybe some people enjoy backpacking, and taking photographs. Or maybe get wild and they can enjoy 3 things and one of them is sharing things on social media. I don't understand why people think they know the motives of others who in all likelihood they have never met or know on a personal level.

I'm sure there are some people who hike for trail cred or likes on social media. But reading through some posts here would have one believe that 99% of hikers are this way, and it's more likely the opposite from people I've met on the trail. I have been responsible for the same "elitist" attitude before and have been trying to take a step back from it and let people hyoh. How is there motivation for hiking my business, or something that we should be judging them for?

I'm judging them because competition is getting tough for these Core permits and I believe myself to be a superior hiker with a higher capacity for appreciating such a place, so these types should have to get in line behind me!

If it was up to me, we'd have more Brunyon and less social media up there! Someone who's been competing at an elite level for years!

I really hope this is sarcasm. Even if it's not I'm going to pretend it is and not even get into it.🤣

yesterday I heard a Planet Money or Freakanomics podcast about the NY Marathon. There are four ways to get in: lottery, donating a lot of money to a charity, locals if they've done something like 9 local running events, and elite runners.

Be nice if the Forest Service had multiple ways of getting in, based on several criteria. On the other hand, the entire Sierra range is like the Enchantments. I was just there enjoying some amazing sun and scenery a couple days ago.

I do think this is a good format with some exceptions. I don't like the donating option just because your immediately closing doors to the less well off and opening them for those with more wealth. If it was measured in hours volunteering or something like that I think it would be a better idea.
