Made the long drive out to White Pass yesterday in search of good snow and open roads. Didn't want to deal with the crowds at the ski area, so I parked in the maintenance shed lot just west of the pass and headed out on FS 1284. After a brief uphill, the road is mellow. At about 2 miles in, views open up to Tieton Pass, Chimney Rock, and Coyote Ridge. Unfortunately, the views were obscured by pesky fog.
I continued on another mile toward a clearing with views of Rainier, but with the lingering fog, I decided to head uphill to escape it. Broke trail in varying snow uphill, generally following the summer Sand Lake trail. Just before the climb topped out, I found a rocky outcrop at 5200' that offered nice views and less fog. Lingered up here with the pup for a bit before the fog starting creeping in at my elevation.
Returned the way we came and only saw a few people all day
