I found this both interesting and surprising. About the intersection of luxury goods and fast fashion. https://www.fastcompany.com/90972835/the-problem-with-your-cashmere-sweater

I've always wondered why (as far as I know) mountain goat wool was never used here. They were hunted, their skins were used and traded. The fur must be warm. It's got to be soft, too, they're so closely related to the musk ox.

Darn, I was hoping this was an Aplet & Cotlet Festival announcement.

Most of my July (four weeks) was spent either trekking in Mongolia or on a jeep safari there. The overgrazing of the land is definitely causing increased desertification. As mentioned in the article when the goats graze the entire plant roots and all are eaten. Each goat produces about 500 grams of cashmere which provides ~$50 to the herder. The wool is combed off of the animal in May and the animal is not killed. In the mountains the herders are given $50 for every loss of an animal due to snow leopard predation which reduces poaching of the snow leopards.

Yup, thought it was about the Aplets and Cotlets, which survived retirement. I guess. Or a new giant fruitstand. Not going to worry about this until people who are flying and driving to these places to be tourists stop doing so. Such travel is also detrimental to the climate.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Cashmere is full of hidden riches "A man named Hugo decided to purchase a scratch ticket while shopping at his local grocery store, according to Washington's Lottery. In a media release, Washington's Lottery said Hugo purchased a "7-11-21" ticket from a vending machine at Martin's Market Place in Cashmere. Washington's Lottery said Hugo waited to get home to begin revealing the numbers. Hugo continued scratching without a prize until he arrived at the very final line where he learned he won $50,000, the largest possible prize, according to Washington's Lottery. Washington's Lottery said Hugo asked his father to double-check the ticket and scanned it online before sharing the news with his whole family"
