Here is a lengthy article in today's Seattle Times with lots of photos, graphs, and charts documenting the arrival of Covid-19 in Washington State along with the healthcare response, the state and federal messaging and actions taken. Most of this has been covered here at times, but this is a good overall look at the past few months. Titled: How the coronavirus overwhelmed Washington state’s early efforts to contain it. ~z

Heard about the tigers on the radio today. I had heard that a cat tested positive about a week ago but thought it couldn't be right. I have two cats. Another reason not to get the bug.

Yeah, not only may other animals get infected and die, but more importantly (and this is the part that scares me) this could give the virus a "reservoir" other than humans where it can hide, then reemerge when conditions allow.

People are going to continue asking these questions.
Indiana sees 'alarming' spike in mental health, addiction issues amid coronavirus
Indy Star wrote: | During Gov. Eric Holcomb's Friday press briefing, Family and Social Services Administration Secretary Dr. Jennifer Sullivan revealed what she called "alarming" numbers around mental health and addiction in the state. Sullivan said Indiana's 211 hotline went from receiving roughly 1,000 calls a day regarding mental health — including suicidal ideation — to 25,000 calls a day. |

The updated UW model now projects Washington has hit peak for deaths and total deaths through August 1 will be 632. Also projecting no hospital resource shortages in the state. Many of those would have died of other causes. Prohibitions on low interaction activities like driving to trailheads and hiking is absurd. Even crazier is shutting down schools and businesses and throwing thousands of people out of work. It’s classic wealth asserting it’s privilege. The old and politically powerful versus the young and weak.

These projections are “assuming full social distancing through May 2020“. With reduced distancing, the model outcomes likely change.

I got an e-mail from a friend who got stuck in Arizona for a couple weeks after a camping trip. Says people are going about their business as if nothing is going on with very little evident self-distancing. Golf courses and parks are open and considered essential services. He's headed back to Canada today and will self-quarantine.

The social distancing in the model assumed to continue through May, nation-wide, include school closures, stay-at-home orders, and non-essential business closures.
As Dr. Fauci has said, “I think we should be overly aggressive and get criticized for overreacting."
It is good news that this model has improved substantially for Washington, and the Western US in general. Other parts of the country, not so much. The current level of social distancing in Washington, Oregon, and CA appears to be working. Think of how bad the situation would be if it wasn't.

Just a note on the heavy duty face masks. Most only filter on the in breath, and exhale through a flimsy one way valve. Protects the user, but not much better then your hand in front of your face for others. Mine vents down, and will drip from condensation after a half an hour. Looks like the one ski linked vents forward( possibly). If so, i imagine a cough or sneeze in either would spread droplets.
Not preaching anything, just something to consider. If you use one, and are concerned, I'm sure you could modify.
We had a high end fit test done this past summer. Computer hooked to airhoses. My 3m half face did very good, but only 1/3 as good as a full face mask. Construction is phasing to full face only for certain things. Disposable masks can only be used if no mask is required.
Oregon is still allowing construction as essential. We are still shut down in washington. A handful of our guys are doing emergency repairs/work at medical facilities.

Here's an interesting chart from Kaiser Family Foundation on the varying approaches that U.S. states took to Stay at home orders:

Not all states have the same conditions, population distributions, resources etc. What some see as scattershot others see as the flexibility necessary for each state to govern itself. One Best Way which is wrong, doesn't help all, it harms all. And there is no objective way to discern a putative One Best Way.

What do you expect to happen after May if we relax any of these rules?
