Wednesday September 23, 2020 09:08 PDT Dear Interested Party: The Olympic National Forest Hood Canal District Ranger and Forest staff have prepared a draft Decision Notice (DN) and final Environmental Assessment (EA) for public review and, for those who submitted previous written comments, an opportunity to object before a final decision is made. This project continues the Forest Service’s commitment to forest management and supporting local communities. The draft decision meets the project goals of developing late successional and old-growth forest habitat, improving water quality, and managing the road system in a way that balances existing and expected needs with funding levels. The array of project activities includes: forest restoration thinning which also provides wood product, improving water quality and stream habitat, and removing diseased trees in the Coho campground. In addition, the project manages the Forest road system by repairing and maintaining some roads for long term use, decommissioning some roads, and placing other roads into closed/stored status to remain available for future needs. The final EA was updated to include written responses to comments received as well as other minor corrections and updates, but largely remains unchanged. The draft decision document and final Environmental Assessment are available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=53124 under the ‘Decision’ tab. The objection process gives another opportunity to raise previous comments or concerns before a final decision is made. A meeting may be offered between objectors, the Forest Supervisor (Objection Reviewing Officer), and the District Ranger (Deciding Official) in order to discuss and potentially resolve objections. See the attached letter for more information about the project and the objection process. Thank you for your interest and engagement in the Wynoochee Restoration and Road Management Project. Hi Ski, Thank you for posting this update. A few mentions: In this EA, when the Forest Service talks about decommissioning a road or making it's status ML1, they state "Non-motorized access on decommissioned or closed roads: As part of project design, a walkable zone would be made or left available, where feasible to do so, on system roads that are closed/stored (ML1) or decommissioned system to provide opportunities to walk more comfortably on a level grade that is not subject to vehicle traffic. Closed and decommissioned roads also provide additional opportunities for other forms of non-motorized recreation, such as biking, horseback riding, and dispersed camping." They are very clear about their intentions to create user friendly travel route margins (where feasible). The 2270-600 has not been drivable for some years. Instead, it has become a user foot path connecting the Wynoochee drainage to the upper end of the West Fork Humptulips Trail. It will go from proposed decommissioning to a Road-to-Trail route. The 2270-400 Wynoochee Pass road will be changed as Road-to-Trail. BUT, this will be delayed as we (Peninsula Access Coalition) have partnered with the Forest Service, in a new venture for both of us, an Adopt-a-Road project. This was our first summer of taking over maintenance of this road. The delay will remain in place under two conditions: 1) We have a road maintenance permit and 2) the culvert and road remain functional. We will continue to develop this program and hope to add to it. All of the above is proof that being engaged in projects and building relationships with land agencies is productive. Do we get everything we ask for? of course not. But these changes are awesome!

Thanks for your work on this project, M. We were thinking about going out there to check out the area, but the Corona virus thing put a damper on that. I am hoping that this "road to trail" project turns out better than some we've seen photos of here on the site. BK
