Mayor of Astoria “Appalled” by “Irresponsible Vacationers” Hitting the Oregon Coast During a Pandemic

Quote:
He issued a statement tonight decrying "irresponsible vacationers" and calling on Oregon Gov. Kate Brown to close state parks. Jones pledged to convene an emergency meeting of the Astoria City Council to close campgrounds and short-term rentals in his city.

Many people ignored Brown's plea to stay home this weekend—an instruction still not backed by any force of law—and went to the beach in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak that has killed four Oregon residents and threatens thousands more. The governor was said to be "frustrated" by the blasé response to her entreaties.

People Pack the Oregon Coast Despite Warnings to Stay Home

Quote:
Just chatted with the mayor of Warrenton on the coast. He wants tourist to go home until this pandemic is over. He says they don’t have the medical resources of a big city to help if the virus shows up here. Says it is concerning to see a long line of traffic headed to the coast.

My fave, which I noted yesterday in Trail Talk

Quote:
Anxious Oregonians Head for the Woods, Creating a Traffic Jam in the Columbia River Gorge
“Parking lots and roadside parking overflowed this week, with cars parking in ditches and blocking intersections.”

I get it, being outdoors is one of the few places to stretch your legs for reals, but is 'social distancing' really effective if the trail is packed with people?

I went for a walk at Nisqually NWR this morning before it filled up will people (parking lot was nearly full at 9:30 am when I left to go home) and I overheard two people talking about the stop and go bumper to bumper traffic in Aberdeen and Hoquium of people heading out to the coast this weekend. They said it reminded them of rush hour traffic driving into downtown Seattle.

Virus rebels from France to Florida flout lockdown practices

Yep, a certain % of us can't do the right thing; seems we need/deserve a China-style (or at least Italian better-late-than-never) lockdown. From a reader of the WaPost:

... all the small towns on the coast were flooded with traffic and visitors coming over from the metro areas in the valley (Portland, Eugene, Salem, Southern Washington). It looked like a holiday weekend. People strolling along eating ice cream.  Shops and restaurants were open. Our small town mayors were begging people to stay home as our rural medical systems are extremely vulnerable. Here in Tillamook county...we have 25 ICU beds for 25,000 people. No testing of course.

Coast town Warrenton orders visitors to leave, Astoria may follow.

There's not much need in locking down the entire state, the urban areas alone would do. No one outside them is heading into the hot zones if they can help it.

This might be workable if we had something close to near-universal testing for everyone.  Except for perhaps 3rd world countries, the USA is the most unprepared place for having a handle on where this is spreading.  If we could test everyone, regional lock downs might work, although some of the most hard hit areas that have them are having difficulty enforcing them.  The guv of NY is tearing his hair out:

Quote:
Cuomo gave New York City officials 24 hours to come up with a plan to deal with residents still congregating in parks and other places and not practicing social distancing. He noted 53% of the cases in New York are between the ages of 18 and 49 and 40% to 80% of state residents may contract coronavirus.

“It’s insensitive, arrogant, self-destructive ... and it has to stop, and it has to stop now,” he said. “This is not a joke and I’m not kidding.

We'll see how things change here in the coming days. The National Guard has just been activated in Washington, California, and New York.

Oh give me a break.

Anyway yeah think I'm done with hiking for now, trails anyway; gonna stick with the bike, although wouldn't be surprised to hear further restrictions this week that put a damper even on that.  Brief experience on the Burke today was downright terrifying.

I do not fear our National Guard.  They had a road block by Morton when hwy 12 to the east was closed due to landslide danger.  They were allowing residents to come and go.  I went to Morton to get some groceries.  All you had to say at the checkpoint was that you lived in Randle.  No ID was asked for--nothing.  Easy peezy.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Must be the concentration of folks in Washington compared to California because I've not seen these problems here. Or maybe we pay more attention and follow what is recommended . Anyway, we have our "liberty and freedum" wingnuts here , some imported from the NW, but most of us are happy to listen to science.

The next few weeks will be critical to see if people acting for the common good was sufficient to HELP the common good. This is what is called "socialism" and even the most extreme are buying into it, if not the words. But whatever
