I have given blood twice. Both times, I got ill shortly afterwards. The recipient had to discard my blood after finding out that I became ill. In these Covid times, I think about trying again, but I am very leary and don't want to invite illness. Have any of you had similar experiences?

I haven't had issues like that.
The folks at the donation center where I donate are pretty fastidious about proper cleanliness.
I recently checked with my donation center and the next available appointment isn't until mid-May.
They worry about giving blood that has transient bacteria in it. That is why they may ask a question about recent dental work. Dental cleaning will introduce bacteria into the bloodstream. When AIDS was just being recognized as a disease they would ask if I had ever had sex with someone from Africa. I'm not kidding.
I have 2 more pints to give for my 3 gallon pin. I wanted to donate but because I was in India last August I am prevented from donating. I was in the far north Himalayan India but they said no.
I gave blood in early March I think and they asked that I report cold/flu symptoms. No probs for me. I am scheduled again in a few weeks and look forward to donating.
The screening questions, at least for males, go way beyond having sex with/in Africa.
