Wapshilla Ridge lies at the south end of The Craig Mountain Wildlife Area just south of Lewiston Idaho. The ridge eventually drops down to the confluence of the Snake and Salmon Rivers in canyon country. I spent the night up a spur road near the gate at the end of Zaza Rd as I had done on a previous visit last year. Motorized use is not permitted beyond the gate so this is a quiet area. I did see a group of mountain bikers who said they had never seen anybody else up there. I imagine in hunting season there is more use.

Last year I walked all the way to the southernmost point called Birch Creek Benchmark, about 7 miles out. This time I only went to the 4.5 mile point where the road dives down to the Snake River. An old sheep drive takes off from here and stays on the ridge about 2.5 miles more. I expected some big thunderstorms to move in but the weather stayed calm and hot.
