The day after we did Big Craggy and West Craggy we went out to do Abernathy Peak. We had attempted Abernathy peak from the Gardner Meadows side a few weeks earlier, but were thwarted by the weather. The weather still looked windy, but still seemed alright.
We left the Scatter Lake TH at around 9am and walked the very well maintained trail towards the lake. The views and the creek running below were beautiful. We changed into out mountaineering boots at around 5,700’, where the snow became very consistent. Then, we walked up to the lake. At the lake's outlet we turned southeast and gained Peak 7763, that connected the south ridge to Abernathy peak. We walked the ridgeline all the way to the top.
There were a few exposed moves on the ridge - but nothing really super dangerous. Great views and definitely seemed better than climbing the southern slope directly. Once we got to the top we hung out and ate some pancakes that we brought with us up there - we thought it would be a good summit snack.
Then, we glissaded the whole way back to the lake almost directly down the south/southeast slopes. Super fun! Then, we followed our footsteps and the trail all the way back to the car. It is definitely Spring down in the valley and still a little chilly up high.
The trail is amazing condition still and there are an awesome amount of wildflowers growing down low - I bet they will be wonderful all over the trail in a few weeks.
