If there was ever any doubt that REI has sold out....now they are collaborating with West Elm on a line of dinner ware and outdoor furniture https://www.rei.com/h/at-home

Umm, the sell out happened when the store no longer smelled of creosote.

Everyone on the Board who voted “yes” to hiring a CEO from Coach should have been voted out during the next election cycle.

I most have spent a lot last year, on socks I used to think were overpriced but are now overpriced everywhere, consumables like electrolytes, and a ski setup. My dividend got me a free gtx jacket in a color I love.

I'm sure it will be available in the REI Outlet within a year.

If only this was a free country and no one had to shop at REI or buy stuff from West Elm. Think of all the crybaby whining the rest of us wouldn’t be subjected to by panicking snowflakes. What a wonderful world it would be!

You come off as stable and well adjusted when you talk about people who have an opinion you don't like as crybabies and snowflakes.

Part of their problem, at least in their earlier years, was selling the most durable gear to people who would drive 20 miles farther away to buy it for $5 less.

I'm another who misses Marmot Mountain Works. REI has changed, like everything else, and West Elm is another step away from their legacy. In other news, I hear the National League is considering the DH. Change.

The owner of MMW became sick and had to sell the store and there were no buyers frown.gif . They were very popular with the backcountry ski crowd and provided excellent service. I got a lot of stuff there. A prominent poster here used to work there.

I miss them too. It's great to have alternatives/choices. I got a lot of good advice and some gear when I was taking the Bushwhacker Climbing Club mountaineering course back in the day. ~z

As I understand it there was an offer to purchase by folks that knew the shop and its operations very well. The offer wasn't as high as the asking price , so the owner chose to liquidate. I don't understand the rationale for taking nothing rather than something.

I do not know for sure but there may have been trademark problems. The shop was the only shop in the world with the name Marmot which is a California manufacturer of outdoor equipment. A purchaser would likely not be able to use the name. When the shop was first established it was with the permission of the company which never had an interest in the store. I went to law school with the owner.
