What is the trail from Highway 20 to the Ross Lake Resort pickup spot like? Easy enough for young kids? Would I be able to navigate a wagon full of gear (cooler etc.) down it?

The kids would have no problem. The wagon? Forty years from now, the kids will still be talking about the day dad tried to get the wagon to the lake. wink.gif Are you aware that there is a reasonable way to get your cooler to the lake? You can take the Diablo ferry and meet the truck from the resort, which will haul your stuff up to the Ross Lake dam on the old dam haul road.

Unfortunately it looks like that is not an option at this time. The website does give conflicting information about a 2PM ferry but also says there is no ferry service on Diablo lake. Seattle City Light is definitely not running their sightseeing trips on Diablo Lake. I called the resort and they said they are asking everyone hike in. We've got 3 adults and 4 kids planning to camp so trying to figure out how best to manage.

The trail has some steep sections. Maybe a jogging stroller with a brake could navigate down. You'll need to drink all the beer and eat all the food before thinking about going up.

I tried to take a cooler on wheels down that trail. Unbelievably frustrating. 0/10 would not recommend. Too much uneven rocky surface. I wound up carrying it. But kids, no problem. Don't bring too much weight, the trail is fairly steep (600 feet over a mile) on there way out.

think a 40lb canoe could be portaged down(and up) the ross lake trail, or would the 5 mile canoe and more gentle portage from diablo be significantly better?

If you have a canoe designed to be carried on your shoulders it could work, but it would not be fun. There are wheel sets for that purpose that would allow you to cruise on the more level stretches. The paddle across Diablo only works if the wind is not blowing as hard as it often does, and if the truck from the resort won't meet you to haul up your canoe...let's just say I would not want to carry it up those switchbacks on the haul road in the full sun!

The resort trail is narrow and in some places you can't step off the trail. It's also a busy trail, people day hiking and backpacking use it to access the farm, Green Point, Cougar Island, Big Beaver, etc. So there will be people coming and going while you're portaging. There are enough bends and bumpy rocks in the trail that wheels are very frustrating to try to use. It sounds like a bad day to me.

It goes on my shoulders but its so long... 19 feet. The flip side of that length though... once we actually get to ross lake though it should fly.

Sounds like paddle to the diablo portage road and then those strap on wheels up the truck road to ross might be easiest? Or just be lazy and you know... call the truck.

Getting the cooler back UP the trail at the end of your trip, even empty, will be very not fun. It's a significant little uphill grunt. And it's definitely a trail, not a smooth gravel path.
