I see/hear Chinooks fly overhead sometimes. I was curious about their max payload. According to wiki they weigh about 24,000 lbs. and that is also their max payload. I'm only guessing, but I really doubt that most helicopters can transport cargo equaling their own weight.

Good...
A monument to stupidity (sorry, not a real admirer of the original occupant (Christopher McCandless) or the dipstick tourists who tried to go visit in a terrain that is not very friendly to greenhorns...

Better 1 single flight to move the bus to a location where noobs won't be stranded or drowned trying to get to it than several rescue and recovery missions every season.

I read the book, haven't seen the movie. Like all Krakaur books, it was compelling and tragic. Everyone I know who's seen the movie enjoyed it, I need to get around to watching it sooner or later.
I hope it winds up somewhere easily accessible. The story and the bus itself have clearly captured the public imagination. I don't think there's any kind of museum that would take it.
Good on the armed forces for doing this for free, and also for taking care to get the man's personal items to his family.

Circa '08 used to see lots of guys headin' off for long, lonely, deeply introspective solo ventures, blastin' Eddie vedder's "into the wild" soundtrack with overly stoic looks on their faces as the drove up that north casc highway.. trying to catch those mccandless vibes. Headin' off into the dark vibes. Rough trips.
That went out of style eventually

I’m with Hiker John on this one. I never understood the fascination with this story. It seems kind of sick to lionize someone for what he did. This is the perfect example of the dangers of celebrity worship.

drove the alcan many years ago. went to circle city ak looking for something that was not available anywhere(and I mean anywhere). I pushed my own limits and found that some times your goals are way to high. now in poor health, lacking the energy to even walk to the store I ponder the sense of those excursions into the wild!

The line between pushing yourself to the limits and being foolish is often scribed by Lady Luck.
The older I get, the less I judge those who choose to push the limits.

How did the bus get there in the first place? I saw the movie, but it was a while ago and if the movie explained that, I forget.

It was left there when they were building the road in about 1960

I couldn’t believe it when this story of misrepresented ignorance was assigned secondary school reading for my kids. Live of the land.
Thank you Air National Guard.
