I hiked on up out the woods and had lunch on top of a rock in the boulder field. Salami sammy. It was good. Then I continued hopping up the rocks. 10 minutes later saw a flash of tail. Thought it was a snaffle, but it didn't holler at me so I stopped and waited to see what is really what. Peak a boo.

My, what sharp claws you have. Head is about as big as my fist. It kept dodging and weaving in and out the rocks. I played whack a mole with my camera.

Eventually I realized critter is circling me, cutting off the ring, closing distance and gaining the high ground. Stalking, not scared.

So I quit taking pictures and gtfo w/quickness. Except for one more.

My hunch is lunch brought critter to me and it had been spying for awhile before I noticed. Can someone please ID?

American Marten, if I am not mistaken.

Here's a post of mine from 5 years ago with a similar creature. https://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8018389 Because it was playing in the water, I thought it was an otter at the time!
Quote:
Actually, I first thought it was a fisher....or a marten...or a? I only went with otter based on its swimming ability and comparing it to web images. It was rolling, diving and staying under for a bit. Definitely had a longer leaner body than adult otters I've seen. As you said, more mink-like. uhh.gif
Was later identified as a mink in replies. Definitely cute and weasel-like.

My first guess was a Marten, probably wanted some Salami.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I wasn’t paying attention to the seductive salami smell. I was assuming pika hunting. I think you’re right.

Thanks for the help folks. Looking at rando internet pics I also think marten. Cool trip GOaG. I think you got a mink and our animals are different. Exactly 5 years ago today I saw what I'll now call a marten near Highchair Mountain. Same peak a boo behavior, except I was moving and hadn't stopped or eaten anything recently. When the photo sesh was done I moved on the marten did not follow me.

I had a quick glance at one in the snow up on the MLH, up Deer Creek road and then to the old road that heads to Devils Lake-thumb. It was near the first turn to the left near the creek about a mile or so in...but yes, cute lil buggers!

Lucky you to be so close for a prolonged time. It might have been following you in the hopes that you would flush out some prey for it to eat.

I would train this little guy to ride on my pack. Or he would train me to carry him on my pack. What is he looking at in the first pic? Seems like he would be focused on the hiker, but there was something else he was looking at. I would guess you had a dog with you, but it seems like little Marty Marten wouldn't be hanging around if you had a dog.

real cute...until he eats an even cuter Pika...nature!

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.
