Reservations required from May 21 to Sept. 30 for day trips to Yosemite, Glacier, and Rocky Mountain National Parks this summer due to Covid crowds. Reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov beginning at 8 a.m. on April 21. Each day-use reservation is valid for one vehicle for three days https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/yosemite-and-other-national-parks-to-limit-summer-visitors-due-to-covid-19/

I assume this doesn't apply to cyclists? Could be a great year to ride Going to the Sun Road without having to worry as much about getting hit by someone trying to upload to instagram while they drive.

No reservation required at Glacier if you: arrive on foot or bike (so that includes anyone going on Amtrak); arrive before 6 am or after 5 pm. This could work for people with lodging near but not in the park; if you have a lodge room, backpacking permit or any other service reservation within the park. Amtrak is the way to go IMO since you travel at night both coming and going, but it doesn’t work without the shuttle service Glacier usually has. “Day-use visitors who arrive by private vehicle or motorcycle and enter the West and St, Mary Entrances, or via the Camas Road, between 6 am and 5 pm MST must have an Entry Reservation Ticket. Entry Reservation Tickets are valid for seven consecutive days per vehicle. They may be used anytime within that seven day period. Visitors arriving on foot or bicycle do not require a day-use Entry Reservation Ticket. Day-use reservations are included with any overnight lodging and service reservations along the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor between the West and St. Mary Entrance Stations. This includes visitors with overnight accommodations, including Village Inn, Lake McDonald Lodge, Rising Sun Motor Inn, Granite Park and Sperry Chalets, Fish Creek Campground, or in-park private lodging, and visitors with reservations for wilderness camping, boat rides, guided hikes, horseback rides, or bus tours offered between the West and St. Mary Entrances of the park. An Entry Reservation Ticket for the day is included in your service reservation. The included entry reservation applies only to the dates of your service reservation. Proof of a service reservation (e.g., lodging, tours, etc.) is required and will serve as your Entry Reservation Ticket.” https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/gtsrticketedentry.htm

Add the Sisters and Jefferson Wilderness main trails near Bend OR to the list of those requiring reservations for day use, in addition to your normal Forest Pass, and the trailhead DIY pass. Doesn't matter how you arrive at the trailhead and each reservation is good for only a specific day for one person. All advance reservations for this entire season were sold out by 8:30am on April 1 when they opened them up for this year. You have to have the printed out pass or cell phone copy plus your ID on the trail. They say it is only 16 out of 70 or so trails, but I am not sure where they are finding all those other trails, or they are including trails that can only be accessed from the 16 trails. Just a heads up for anyone thinking they will drop in for a hike in the area without advance planning.

Not all permits for the Bend area are released during the advance sale. More come available every day during the permit season, available one week in advance. “ A portion of permit availability for the full summer season will be released Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at 7 a.m. PDT. This includes day use permits and the Central Cascades Wilderness Overnight Permits – Full Season in Advance. The remaining permit availability comes available seven days before a trip would start. For example, for a trip starting on a Friday, that permit could be reserved starting on the Saturday prior. This includes day use permits and the Central Cascades Wilderness Overnight Permits – Seven Days in Advance.” https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/willamette/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=fseprd688355

I would advise anyone posting to or reading a thread like this to post actual quotes of the rules, including links to the source of the quotes, rather than a general description of their memory of what they read about the rules at some previous times. This comment is not aimed at anyone, just a general observation.

But "I heard..." Usually the only truth that is involved was "I heard".

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

The park solicited public comment about congestion and improvements in the Nisqually entrance to Paradise area last year. Parks need gateway communities on board with any proposed restrictions/reservations and this finally happened with Ashford. So hopefully measures like timed entry are coming. https://www.thenewstribune.com/outdoors/article244863267.html

Yosemite Reservations Are Back (and Your Days May Be About to Sell Out)
Quote:
Beginning on April 21, prospective visitors will be able to buy a timed entry pass—required in addition to the $35 entry fee or a national parks pass—on recreation.gov. Passes will go on sale at 8 a.m. Pacific time. ... Yosemite National Park officials said that they expect the reservations to be snapped up “almost immediately.”

What's disappointing is that over on Reddit folks are writing software that can exploit gaps in the park's website and programmatically secure reservations by attempting the transaction every 5 seconds or so. Hopefully, the Park Services wise up to this otherwise non-tech folks don't stand a chance against bots.

Look if you're looking to SECURE space within the various red taped destinations these days you need to be hirin' out. You need to be throwing cash at the problem these days!! Gotta get these internet guys working for YOU ALONE. Getting those web based internet code program internet applications set up by early March to ensure you can break through the red tape and remain relevant in the outdoor scene with highly desirable itineraries reserved throughout the main months.

For other news regarding Glacier, see the signed FONSI (Finding of No Significant Impact) linked on this site, for Going to the Sun Road Corridor Management Plan: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=61&projectID=47660&documentID=110284 Includes no overnight parking on GttSR. Unknown how backpackers starting or ending on GttSR will manage. The shuttle system is not robust enough to handle all needs. A LOT of bugs exist in these various approved proposals, and the ticketed entry time for Glacier in all probability won't relieve congestion on GttSR, just mitigate the multi-mile backups to get into the Park. Acadia NP in Maine is also going to timed entry for Cadillac Summit Road, May 26-October 19: Cadillac Mntn Res $6 There may also be a (fee-based?) timed entry system to picturesque part of Park Loop Road. This is from 2020. The test in October 2020 did occur. Apparently a major fail was that the "wait" area did not have internet connections: Park Loop Road timed entry Entrance passes required.
