I have been nearly run-over by trail runners. When carrying a heavy pack, I was not sure which way to move, right, or left, to get out of one such runners way, so he just about slammed into me and then cursed at me for getting in his way. If the runners would slow down to walking speed when they pass others that would go a long way towards making peace between those who move fast, and those who move slow. It's all about courtesy 1st, setting records 2nd. If you can't share the trails courteously, then, please run somewhere else. That goes the same for slow travelers too- be courteous, or go somewhere else. Courtesy is the "grease" that prevents friction between people.

Some of the comments here are mind blowing! Hike your own hike, or in this case, run your own run.

Well, Trail Runners are Freaks, and it's human nature to be uncomfortable with others who are "different". lol.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

Agree 100%. As a long-time trail runner (for more than 34 years, but not all on one run !😖), I get irritated with anyone who stubbornly hogs a trail at what ever pace. But as an ambassador for trail running, I am especially irked at runners who are jerks by behaving selfishly and discourteously. They reflect poorly on the sport, similar to bicyclists who blow through stop lights.

Passing rocks and trees like they were standing still

Yes! And I couldn't respond fast enough, with my heavy pack, at the speed in which the situation unfolded.

I generally step aside for runners, regardless of who has the right of way, but obviously it depends on the situation. It doesn't cost me anything, and not stopping means more to them than me. The 99.999% who aren't going for a PR sill want a good workout (without excessive rest stops). I yield to pedestrians and cyclists when driving, too. I got stuck in the snow at a ski TH last year. Four people came to help immediately without being asked. All of us outdoor recreation people are of the same tribe.

Wonderland trail in 17 hrs is awesome! Took me 10 days. However, I haven't seen anyone do what williswall once did. Several years ago, after doing the wonderland trail for the umpteenth time, someone on the internet challenged williswall to do it blindfolded. So, he did it. He first hiked it without the blindfold. Carefully, remembering each step, each rock, or branch on the ground that he had to step over, or on. Then after completing the trail, he put on a blindfold and immediately hiked the whole trail again, this time blindfolded. Freaking incredible!

Kaitlyn Gerbin smashes the FKT for women with 18:41 beating previous women's record by 3:23. 4th fastest time for both women/men.

When there’s money in it? Winning the Boston Marathon pays out $150,000, setting the Wonderland fastest known time pays out $0. Tough to blame someone for choosing to go for the former.

Trail ran Jenny Lake in the Tetons this morning. Had 2 black bear and 1 moose encounter in 35 minutes. Guess I didn't take in the beauty of the outdoors cause I ran.

When asked "Why do you climb"? Simply respond "Why don't you"?

Hopefully you don't encounter a Cougar, although you probably won't know it until it's too late, "Flight or fight instinct". biggrin.gif

I have a "profound" hearing loss, an hereditary condition. Both my mother and grandmother were almost completely deaf. To complicate matters, I am also legally blind. What the combination of these two means is that I am not able to hear people approach, especially from behind me. I also must look down at the trail and even when looking up I see much less than a fully sighted person sees. So don't be too quick to be irritated if someone "stubbornly hogs a trail" because there may be a reason other than stubbornness. Rumi
