After 7 weeks of continuous smoke, the wind direction reversed overnight.  Many of the local AQI sensors were reading near zero.  I woke Frances up at 4am to tell her the good news.  We rushed to put together our day-packs and were on the trail by 6:44am.

Amargosa Overlook - 10,154'

There are a number of high peaks in the Spring Range, some of which have good trail access.  This one is not very popular because the last 1.5 miles is off-trail.  The aspens are turning yellow.

Divide Peak - 10,069'

This one is just a bump along the ridge, but there is a register.  About 90 percent of the day was on trail with the last part of each being off-trail.

The standard route is notorious for a loose gully.  Numerous reports mention class 4, however the more experienced peakbaggers seem to agree that it's only brief class 3 if you stay on the route.

Our experience was that the gully is not that bad if you follow the boot path.  There's definitely rock fall danger, so exercise strategy.  Of the two or three spots with class 3 only the first one had some exposure.  It's not a totally straightforward route however, and I can see the possibility for people to get mixed up in scramble areas.
