Park Acquisition & Development Strategy—New Park Selection
Quote:
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will consider selecting the Miller Peninsula State Park Property near Sequim for development of a new full-service state park. Miller Peninsula is being considered from among three candidate properties, including the Fisk property near Spokane and Westport Light State Park in Westport. If selected, State Parks will begin a planning effort for the future park. The meeting is at 9 a.m. Thursday, November 21, at the Wenatchee Convention Center, 121 N Wenatchee Ave, Wenatchee, Washington. The new park selection discussion is scheduled for approximately 12:55 p.m. You are welcome to attend and will have an opportunity to provide comment. If you want to provide written comment regarding the item please send it to Commission@parks.wa.gov by 5:00 p.m. November 15, 2019. The item will be posted at http://bit.ly/ParksAgendas prior to the Commission meeting. If you have questions about this agenda item or wish to receive a copy, please contact: Nikki Fields, Parks Planner, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission P.O. Hikers may recall that in 2005, Washington State Parks began a six-year project to establish one of Washington’s next destination state parks at Miller Peninsula, near Sequim. This was placed on hold due to state budget constraints. Instead, a trailhead parking lot was completed on Diamond Point Road and an interim trail plan for this undeveloped park property was completed. Volunteers with BCHW and WTA extensively improved and signed the 20-mile trail system. It is open to hikers, bikers and equestrians, and connects to additional trails on adjacent property owned by the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe. Under the 2007 plan, development would affect only ~10% of the area of the property and two of the trails. Any new plan is likely to have the same constraints. I have no idea what priority for development the commission might decide between its Westport, Fisk and Miller Peninsula properties, nor whether development of a new park will be funded in the state budget.

Washington State Parks' recommendation to the State Park Commission: "EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:This item asks the Commission to select the Miller Peninsula property for development of a new full-service state park ...it has become evident that the Miller Peninsula property is best suited for development of the next new full-service state park. There is clearly a need and support for a state park in all three locations, but Miller Peninsula has the space necessary to accommodate the widest range of experiences and amenities, the fewest constraints on development, and it is most ready to proceed... "STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Commission select Miller Peninsula as the next full-service state park and direct staff to develop an updated vision and principles to guide park planning, design, development, and operation. Staff should then proceed with park master planning and preparation of a predesign report." This appears on pages 10-14 of the commission's Nov. 20, 2019 meeting agenda, posted here.
