Thanks to my NWHikers friends who may have saved SAR a weekend trip to the Enchantments or worse. Now let’s hope that others who may be considering a similar trip there this weekend will read these comments and heed them.
I really am glad to have received such quick responses! I will skip this plan for now and hopefully get back to hiking this area sometime next summer with more experience.
There's a lot of great hiking (and snowshoeing and skiing) you can do all winter.
Hi PNW_Newbie, I lived in Ogemaw County, Michigan for 17 years and Grand Rapids for 6 years before moving to Seattle. My girlfriend is from Flint.
I'd probably avoid the Enchantments right now. Michigan snow is different than Washington snow; especially when you factor in the mountains. Things can get hairy fast out here. I strongly encourage you to go check our Rainier if you haven't yet though. I slept on it (aside from blizzardy snowshoeing) for the first two years of living out here and hugely regret it in hindsight!
Send me a PM and I'll be happy to show you around Washington and tell you about the sekret spots sometime if you want.
Good call PNW_Newbie! This was a plan that might have sounded good on paper but most likely would have been a disaster. You should do that plan next summer to get a feel for it first. You'll have tons of daylight and better weather to work with. Welcome to the area!
