Sunday was a great day to be out. Burnt mnt is a good winter or fall trip for those shorter daylight days. Approach as if going to Ipsut, cross the Carbon river on the nice long cement bridge right before the park entrance. Right after crossing the bridge the gravel road takes a rising right turn. Park at the first road coming in on your left. This road is closed to vehicles ( gate ) but has signage indicating its fine to be hiking on it. Enjoy the serenade of target shooting in this area. Despite numerous 'NO TARGET SHOOTING" signs. Hike the flatfish road until a lesser spur comes in on your right. Take the the right turn and start rising up...then really steep up. Follow until you see a sweeping clearcut above. I entered the clearcut keeping on the right side. Enter forest above and go straight up. Numerous game trails to followed but they mostly traverse...so don't follow them vary far. Lots of Salal. From the top of the clearcut to the ridge is about 800ft gain so the off trail/brush portion is modest. Once the ridge is gained head east toward the summit and you'll hit a trail, then after a few hundred yards the trail will dump you onto a wide open turn in a logging road. Follow the road all the way east to the summit. Although the summit is treed and unimpressive, the road to it is open and offers expansive views in different directions. A longer day would be to continue east towards Old baldy mnt. About 8" of snow on top.

One of my favs for getting a good quick elevation gain. You can follow the fire trail that goes up the west edge of the old burn, I tried to keep it clean, but the snags keep coming.
