A lot has been said about sequestering carbon by planting trees, but what about water? The molecular formula for cellulose being C6H10O5, that means every molecule contains 5 water molecules. How much could the sea level rise be mitigated by simply planting trees?
You need to figure out the suitable habitat for trees. They won't grow everywhere. In the PNW we now have housing developments where there once was prime forest land.
Trees need specific conditions for each species, and even elevation needs to be taken into consideration. It isn't as simple as some want it to be.
Unless we tear down houses and rip up farmland for replanting in forest, I don't think it is practical.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Figuring out how to reduce the current rapid rate of deforestation would be a good first step.
There is so much potential for the law of unintened consequences here -- rememember how excited people got about Biodiesel a few years ago? Then in tropical countries landowners started clearing old growth tropical rainforest to plant palm trees to supply palm oil.
