The start of the lake kachess road will be plowed (there are houses there) and than the rest of the road will become sno-park. You can walk it, but it will be a long walk to the trailhead and you will be sharing it with very smelly snowmobiles once the season starts.

The road is plowed to the Sno-Park near the Lake Kachess Campground. This more than doubles the distance to Rachel Lake. The road is popular with snowmobiles. The trail itself travels through multiple avalanche run out zones. So having an understanding of avalanche risks is wise. The Northwest Avalanche Center provides general snow stability forecasts.
