I picked another quart this evening. They are in the freezer for future smoothies. YouTube had some good ideas that I will try in the upcoming winter.

I was recently in Guadeloupe Mtns National Park in Texas and there is a variety there called Texas Madrone. Also known as "manzanita" or little apple in Spanish because of its fruit. I was surprised as I had always thought these trees were only located in the PNW.

They actually grow into Mexico even - and in the southwest, as you saw.
