Since skiing was pretty awful after the tropical rain last week, we headed to Suntop Lookout for star gazing. We did take our ski gear thinking we'd be skinning the road most of the way. However, there was no snow at the snow park and until about 3400'. We hiked the first 3 miles with our ski boots, which were not made for hiking unlike those old leather ski boots. Skinning the last 2 miles was on hard crust, maybe 1/4" of light powder. I think this destination will be good for hiking w/o any flotation devices for a while, maybe microspikes for the last bit.
The night was clear and the sunrise was beautifu. Skiing down was challenging but good for practicing snowplow...
Amazing sunrise Kenji! Sorry the skiing has been poor lately, hopefully it'll pick up here in the next couple months. I hadn't heard of Suntop before, I'll have to keep that one in mind. Nice report!
