Recent weaknesses and crusts, low density new snow with strong winds, topped with increasingly dense snow after about noon today, with further warming Tuesday. Think of the new snow as being top-heavy.
A cornice fall or avalanching new snow could release much thicker buried slabs.
Now looks like the warmest temperatures were during the day Monday. However, heavy snow continues and the upper layers will settle into more of a slab atop low density snow and weak layers/crusts. Winds will enhance that slab formation.
Both Stevens Pass and Snoqualmie are closed with avalanches running onto roadways yesterday with the warming.
This whole scary and unpredictable mess may well get taken out by a potentially warm, wet storm around Sunday or Monday the 21st.
If you are going out this weekend, make sure it is not Sunday with increasing snow and rising temperatures. Avalanche hazard will be elevated through most or all of Monday.
While the chance of the really big slides is probably less likely after the warm storm on the February 21st, they are still possible because of lots of new snow with strong winds Thursday and Friday.
But that is not the only problem; as the recent storm slabs are certainly large enough in their own right.
Be careful this weekend and watch the avalanche forecast. Exciting images from most areas.
