| Has anyone scrambled up wild snow? I can find info on all the surrounding peaks but this one. I’m curious about the little sub peak.... |

| When my wife and I were scrambling up Big Snow a few years ago we met a few guys who told us of a mine (I think) on the slopes NE of Upper Hardscrabble Lake, up towards "Wild Snow." |

I thought I wrote a TR for that trip, but I guess not. A member of this forum, belayon, told me about scrambling up there many years ago. My partner and I combined a trip to Hardscrabble Peak with that in 2019. That summit appears to be climbable from west, starting at the gap you'd take from Upper Hardscrabble Lake to climb Big Snow. I think it might be less steep that way than from the ridge we took. But it was a fun 3rd class scramble.

That whole area was surveyed by miners in the 60s and 70s prior to it being included in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. There are still some smaller crystal mining operations ongoing.

| Oh thanks man! That helps a lot! I couldn’t really find any info on wild snow....I kind of want to attempt a full circumnavigation of that ridge from hardscrabble peak to big snow, and if it’s only some fun class 3 I might try it! |

It ain't easy from Myrtle lake, that's for sure. Much easier from Upper Hardscrabble.
My wife and I tried twice from Myrtle. Once we failed to find the right gully to get to Big Snow lake. The next time we got to the lake o.k., but got spooked on the upper part of the mtn by what appeared to be deep moats. I'd like to go back again and give it another try from Myrtle Lake! |

| That myrtle lake to snowflake lake route looks like a lot of type 2 fun, but definitely looks interesting! I kind of wanted to try the ALW traverse this summer but start at myrtle lake to big snow then all the way to hinman and back out |

It can be done, but there will be quite a few big drops. Big Snow to Wild Goat is a lot of talus scrambling, but you'll need to cross the ridge at the right spot. I haven't done it, just looked at it from both sides. Your adventure is not a ridge stroll, but should be great. Be careful!

Getting from Myrtle to big snow/snowflake lakes is actually pretty easy *if* you go just the right way.
What I haven't found is a good way to get from the lakes up onto the the slopes of big snow Mt.
There is a steep, smooth rock outcrop between the two lakes that I used the first time I went up there. It was dicey on the way up and positively sphincter puckering on the way down as I didn't have a rope. I also didn't have a pack as I camped at the lake and summited big snow as a side trip. It would be impossible if there's any precipitation, which is why the second time I went up there and it was foggy and showery I spent a bunch of time probing the cliff bands above snowflake lake to no avail.
