This is pretty early, and a foot or two of snow is quite possible - FL 4000-5000' Sunday and maybe a thousand feet lower Monday. Temps at 500mb briefly near February cold storm levels (-32C). Cold air quickly dives all the way to San Diego. Maybe a repeat on the 16th or 17th. Early winter weather, definitely. Will it last, probably not.....but who knows? Coming to mind is a day of perfect powder snow Muir to Paradise October 30th -- then a nada winter. But this is supposed to be a La Nina winter. When I was young, I used to figure Snoqualmie Pass would get it's first snow many years around October 20th (8" or so). The earliest I ever skied on new snow was October 6th at Austin Pass, except for one storm in 1971 or so that dumped 50" on Table Mountain September 24th - powder skiing! Few icefields left, of course, these days.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh I guess I'm looking forward to the change in seasons for day-to-day life but I am sad that the mountains are about to get snowed in. I didn't go out last weekend and I really regret that. Despite that, 2021 has been a good year for me. 43 different hikes. 410 miles. 143,000' of gain. 230 hours of active movement. And a bazillion uncounted miles spent running/walking in Discovery Park.

I get caught out in the cold once every year. It's always on a day hike (I'm paranoid about not bringing enough warmth backpacking) where I just don't realize how cold it will be and don't pack for the season it's become. So I appreciate the info - thanks!

Seasons over. It's too late now. Most locations are closing down for the year, time to just invest HEAVILY into a big home gym to train for next year's endeavers

Hiked 2 days straight in the Selkirks in anticipation of the weather change, today to Hunt lake in near perfect weather except for the wind which is typical for that lake and the elevation. Actually got a bit of a sunburn. Might be a cold winter here, observed what might be a sign while feeding the birds this morning, I spotted the resident Pine Squirrel picking at the cotton underside of a tablecloth, gathering bedding I assume? He has plenty of food.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

You are absolutely right. I just finished hiking up my shorts a moment ago.

It was 17 degrees in Carne Basin Friday morning. Clear sky helped with that.

Owning skis means never having to snowshoe again. devilsmile.gif smile.gif

I spent the night at Leroy basin in late October a few years ago, woke up about 4 in the morning freezing and the entire inside of my tent was ice crystals. I got up and started an emergency fire, placed some a hot rock wrapped in a rag under my feet and slept fitfully by the fire, scared that an ember would light up my down bag. Not sure how cold it was, but probably below 20 degrees. The next day, my partners came up and we hiked up Maude, and luckily it wasn't as cold that night.

Steve and I woke up yesterday morning in Snowbrushy Meadow in the Entiat and our tents were frozen rigid with a layer of ice on the inside and outside. I had my BeFree water filter wraped in a down slipper tucked under my bag and the water in the bottle froze anyway. That means the filter unit is now toast.

I returned one these BeFree filters recently as the filtered water tasted like chemicals/rubber and was undrinkable. Luckily I has access to a fresh spring otherwise I'd have been stuck boiling water and using tablets. I was very surprised Katadyn has resorted to such poor quality products as I have a decade old Vario which works great. Picked up a Sawyer and it works great for fast & light trips. It actually has a warning to put the filter into a sleeping bag as freezing will ruin the filter.
