My friend and I stopped at a place called "Lunch Rock" SE of Jackson on the Snake river and watched several guided rafts go by. Looks like a lot of fun, might do it this year on the way to the Winds.

Both of those sections are fantastic. Getting a private permit is very competitive. Going with a commercial outfitter addresses the permit issue and handles all the logistics and grunt work of a river trip. On my most recent big raft trip, I ended up rowing the "poop" boat by the end could more appreciate the value spending dollars instead sweat.
Must have been kinda challenging rowing with a Honey Bucket, Randito.
But seriously, good to know these outfits have some kind of serioius LNT plan.
On many rivers a "pack it all out" policy is in place by the managing agency. Since the river is also the source of drinking water, using also as a sewer is ill advised, regardless of any other considerations.
Vietnam era army rocket boxes are the standard for toilet usage. There are even seats designed to fit.
The rafts carrying food get lighter and poop raft gets heavier as the trip progresses. On the Colorado through the Grand Canyon, this actually works well for the rower of the poop raft as extra weight helps the raft plow through "stopper waves" in Crystal and Lava the two largest rapids.
