Has anyone hiked this yet? Is the road plowed to this point? I know its at least very close. Any snow on the short trail down to Ross dam? My phone calling has been fruitless...thanks!

I can't say for this year but North Cascades Highway is almost always open to the Ross dam trailhead, except in mid winter when there is heavy snow and avalanche danger in the Skagit River Gorge. Then it is occasionally closed at Newhalem. Ross Lake Trail to Big Beaver River is one of my favorite early season hikes. There may be a few sections of patchy snow further in but nothing major. Check with the park service is they have any current condition updates, but you should be good to go. Have fun!

Thanks Acrowe. Getting a response from the park has been difficult so far. I've heard the road is usually plowed to there, or close to that spot.. but not I'm sure if parking/0vernight parking is allowed there. It sounds like I should be good there.

Parking at the Ross Lake/Ross Dam trailhead on Highway 20 is definitely allowed. It’s a fairly large parking area since it’s a jumping off spot for lots of areas. I really don’t think snow will be an issue. It’s only around 2000’ in elevation. If it snows tonight or tomorrow I’m sure it will melt out in a day or so.

People leave their cars at that TH (or happy panther just up the road) when they backpack down there and stay at the resort. Very routine.

the trail was essentially snowfree to big beaver camp 3 weeks ago, with the exception of a nasty icy snow filled gully near the south end of ross lake resort
