Link "Wildlife officers shot and killed a grizzly bear last Friday after it fatally mauled a guide near Yellowstone National Park, Montana, wildlife officials said in a press release." It appears this bear was defending a moose carcass. Rumi

Also the fact that Grizzlies need to be managed more in MT. This stuff happens every year there.

according to the article the guide deployed bear spray to no avail and the men in the rescue party also used bear spray and other tactics to discourage the bear to no use so they had to kill it... griz are bad and coming out of hibernation they might just be a tad more inclined to attack.....if you come here best be on the lookout constantly with alternate plans of defence,,,like no be caught out in the open, make sure the animal knows you are in the area by bells, talk to your self, and carry plenty of bear spray...we are talking about an animal that does not fear you..

"the guide deployed bear spray to no avail" + "the men in the rescue party also used bear spray and other tactics to discourage the bear to no use" = "talk to your self, and carry plenty of bear spray." ???????

I have read multiple accounts of this episode, and none has specified anything other than making noise and "hazing" by the 7 agency people who went out after the incident to "investigate." (They were not a rescue party.) Apparently the bear dropped at ca. 20 yards from the group of 7. This is very close. From the MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks statementon the matter:
Quote:
A group of seven investigators, including FWP game wardens and bear specialists, as well as Forest Service personnel, revisited the site Friday to assess ongoing public safety risks and continue the investigation. They yelled and made continuous noise as they walked toward the site to haze away any bears in the area. Before they reached the site, a bear began charging the group. Despite multiple attempts by all seven people to haze away the bear, it continued its charge. Due to this immediate safety risk, the bear was shot and died about 20 yards from the group. The bear was an older-age male grizzly. Investigators later found a moose carcass cached within 50 yards of Thursday’s attack. This indicates the bear was defending a food source during the attack.
Nonlethal means include bear bangers, bear spray, and rubber bullets. For an investigation, why not use a drone? Especially as the incident took place close to a road.
