Oregon ski trip day 5 - Mt. Scott This day, the peak to ski was Mount Scott. Mount Scott is in Crater Lake National Park. It is usually approached on a trail from the road that encircles Crater Lake. In early may, this road is closed and covered by lots of snow. We decided to approach from the East side. There are a number of dirt roads in various states of disrepair East of the mountain. It looked like we could get to within about three miles of the summit. We explored three of these roads and were stopped each time by various obstacles. In the end we settled on the one that got us closest to the mountain. This road was blocked by a fallen tree, which added about a 3 mile mostly melted out road walk.

Once off the road, we soon hit snow that was continuous enough, so we switched to the skis. We headed up the East ridge, which was fairly straight forward with no problems. At the top is a lookout. It was still shuttered up for the winter. From the lookout you have great views of crater lake. You can also see Mounts Bailey and Thielsen to the North and McLoughlin to the South. The visibility was not great due to fires burning in the East.

After some lunch and some time taking in the views, we ripped skins and headed down the South East bowl, then down to the road and a walk back to the car.
