Needed a low key trip for the annual gear shakedown and this one fit the bill. The Entiat River trail is in good shape and not too dusty right now. The lack of shade made for a toasty walk, but we made good time to the lake. We were pleasantly surprised by the blue-green color of the lake. Snagged a spot at the south end, figuring we'd have neighbors by nightfall, but we ended up having it all to ourselves. There was one group camping on the north end, but we saw more deer than people on Saturday.
After setting up camp, I headed up to Cow Creek Meadows. The trail was snow free until roughly 4800', after which it was fully covered. No snowshoes required, but there were some soft postholey spots. The snow-covered meadows were beautiful with fantastic views of Rampart and 5th of July Mountains above.
Headed back down to camp as the sun fell behind the ridge. The night was quiet, with only the sounds of a woodpecker, an owl, and deer tromping through the forest accompanying us.
Packed up camp Sunday and had a nice hike out. A bit hotter than the previous day, with the mercury pushing 80F. Great trip with few people on a holiday weekend = good times.

Very sweet looking deer. What kind of bird is the yellow bird?

Nice that you had solitude even on a holiday weekend. Fifth of July and Rampart look stunning with all that snow on them! We camped up at Fifth of July Pass last summer and ran into a couple at Upper Larch Lake who came up from Cow Creek Meadows. The trail through the burn was sketchy in places, but still useable.

Good TR and beta on the Entiat. I have been meaning to go up there, but I was dumb enough to believe the FS road report that said it was still gated at the 25 mile snow park. To their credit, the campground report did say Cottonwood campground was open (but I didn't look there).
I want to car camp at Cottonwood and recon the Shetipo trail to Basalt Ridge and Garland and beyond. A nice multi day fall larch loop would be up Shetiop and out Cow Creek Meadows via Larch lakes. At this point in my life I always like to do a recon first to see what I would be getting myself into!
