Today is the anniversary of our border treaty with the United Kingdom that established the present border with Canada. The Treaty of Ghent in 1814 left undecided a large portion of the current Washington state. Many of us have crossed this border at various locales along the 49th Parallel which was where this treaty sets the border. Part of the treaty states that the border is to be visually defined. The border swath is the result of that stipulation.
