Internet chatter says the Forest Service yanked the permit for Fortune Creek Huts, the commercial hut proposed at Van Epps pass.

The border to Canukastan has recently loosened and vaccinated folks may now head to the Great white north again. The Alpine Club of Canada huts And the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club huts Are all pretty affordable, even the helicopter access ones The proposed US based system sure seems spendy, especially considering the snow quality I've experienced in BC and Alberta compared to the typical "Cascade Concrete".

It will be fun to start seeing more winter trip reports from this area.

Forest Service considering permit for winter only ski hut at DeRoux Campground
That is quite the contrast compared to the previous proposal. Van Epps Pass is on the edge of wilderness. It may have plenty of snowmobiles, but they are deep in there at that point. In contrast, De Roux Campground is very much "on the way". It seems far more likely that skiers would have a conflict with sledders there.

Huts with access for all would be cool. i wouldn't expect that a business venture would be willing to install something without making money. If the ski touring community wants something like that, maybe they should get involved with working on public huts. None of it is going to happen for free or without effort. What is the penalty if someone "accidentally" had their camper van snowed in for the winter at any given trailhead? Other then the possibility of roof collapse from too much snow. Ive humored the idea, but I'm not as ambitious as I used to be. have heard of tale when someone tried it with a box truck, and the roof did collapse. A few choices locations would be north side of Rock mountain(snow creek), blanca lake or quartz creek, the road that goes way up deception creek for starters.

Yes, this is a resurrection of the same previous proposal. Some of the people involved may have changed.

The hut proposed for Heliotrope Ridge will be operated by Aspire Adventure Running, the same organization that operates Wonderland trail glamping/running trips at Rainier, as discussed in this thread.

There's no hut proposed for Heliotrope Ridge. The proposal is instead for a seasonal 400 sq. foot tent in the parking lot on FS39. You can still be mad about it if you want, but it's probably best to try to be somewhat accurate.

Maybe it was just marketing, but they called these winter shelters "huts" back when they first proposed these shelters. "The National Forest Service is currently considering a combined proposal from 3 separate collaborating entities to create a system of temporary backcountry winter huts that would increase opportunities for public access and winter recreation on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. These winter huts would be managed and serviced by Baker Mountain Guides, Roundhouse Touring, and Aspire Mountain Huts, respectively. " Now the proposal refers to these shelters as "fabric shelters". "Aspire Adventure Running proposes to use a portion of the Heliotrope Trailhead parking lot at the end of FS Road 39 (see Figure 2). Installation would include the construction of a 30’ X 14’ wood deck on top of temporary concrete footings with 4’ X 4’ posts. This would serve as the foundation for a fabric shelter." Can a hut be made out of fabric? Is a large tent on a wood deck supported by a foundation a hut? Would the trailer mounted little house proposed by the snowmobile club be a hut?

I assume they would be similar to the 4 season “tent” we stayed at in Quebec. They had a wood deck to stand on similar to those for yurts. They had a double wall of thick coated material with insulation. They had a double bed on the first floor and a sleeping loft above. They also had a refrigerator and a wood stove. There was also a propane range top. They were toasty to at least -20C. Way more comfortable than your standard trappers hut. They could be taken down in Summer. Considerably more comfortable than a yurt.
