Probably nothing? Weird no one's identified them yet.

El-Lissy said other packages contain vegetables like cabbage and herbs including mint, sage, rosemary, and lavender." from: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/07/31/usda-identifies-some-seeds-appear-sent-china/5555404002/

American people do not seem particularly well-prepared for scams of this nature.... People planted seeds even when expressly told not to. Hundreds of people had no idea whether they had ever ordered seeds, or how to check. Some people called 911. Others ate the seeds. Others ordered something specific, got what they ordered from who they ordered it from, then still panicked. Others were furious they had to pay for postage to send the seeds to the government. From one recipient in North Carolina: "I did not receive seeds. I received a suspicious package from China with a spoon and a fork in it my concerns are that it is full of Covid."

I could see mailing something like kudzu that's highly invasive as some kind of slow motion terrorism. But it's not like they're figured out how to put an invading army into a seed, where you add water and they march out of your garden into the state house. Planting random seeds isn't as obviously stupid as eating them.

I just heard an update on this. The "mystery seeds" were legit Amazon orders that thousands of people simply forgot about because shipments were delayed a few months by Covid. They panicked because of the media hysteria and, you know...China. Boxes were mislabeled intentionally in attempt to get around customs. Fascinating. Heard it on The Atlantic's podcast.

It's a relief to learn this was just a simple case of absent minded american consumerism, combined w/AMZN and Chinese business conspiring to deceive US customs, and not something nefarious.

First of all, what the heck does W.C.G.W. even mean? I kept wanting to read it as W.W.J.D.? which was popular back in the day. haha And none of the responses to the thread seemed to mention it. No one asked either. So I guess I didn't get the memo. I did a little searching and found some definitions. Here's a good one. If I had the ability to do a spoiler alert cover I would, but nonetheless it might mean: "What Could Go Wrong" to some folks. Maybe this is the meaning here too. I think it should be "W.C.P.G.W." as in What Could Possibly Go Wrong? I wonder if there are other acronyms that I must have missed while sleeping in class. ~z
