Had to be back home early yesterday, so I did a quick 'up-n-over' on an old friend. Arriving at Melakwa, I saw enough remnant snow to make me wonder if the east face route was melted out, so I headed up the standard way. From the top, I could see that the face route was clear, so I scrambled down the other side. Met a nice bloke on top, and we chatted about past trips down some of the side gullies accessible from the main approach ridge. He ended up taking one of those gullies on the way down, and we hooked up again at Upper Melakwa. Fun hike! A few snaps...
From the main approach ridge... Frosty Chair Peak Lake... ...zoomed. Snow Lake. The ridge from Chair might be fun to explore. I wonder how you get on it... Down the steps, across the ledges, then onto the well-groomed scree-ski runs!

obtw: I didn't realize it till someone mentioned it to my geriatric eyes, but that zoom shot is a Where's Waldo. Can you spot the tent?

It is simple to traverse underneath the N face of Chair Peak to access the ridge.

Once I got to the ridge I quit and turned around, but it seems plausible to scramble on to the false summit in this photo. I think your photo views the opposite, north, side of the false summit in my photo. No idea if you can access the ridge from down low without solid climbing skills. Seems doubtful from the couch.

Thanks for the TR. If I had read it years ago, I would have tried harder to explore myself.

Ah, OK, so approach as you would for the N.E. Buttress climb on Chair? ...beyond the Snow Lk trail and past "The Thumbtack," or whatever it's called? I did that climb a few times years ago, and I kind of remember the approach, but when you're at the base of the Buttress and ready to start, I don't remember many options to climber's right.
Thanks for the beta!

Seeing that tent has inspired me! What an amazing place to wake up. I think I might try shopping around for some lightweight overnight gear. Apart from a couple of forced bivies and one or two Rainier over-nighters, I have never camped. It's a skill I'd like to learn, though. Good eyes, btw!

Yes. In my 1st pic, above, NEB is in the shade, out of frame to the left. Just keep traversing straight instead of climbing, and try to scramble on to high point on ridge in front of you. The blocky mound to the right. Unverified. Getting to the ridge was easy for me, and scrambling to the blocky high point was too exposed for my mood that day, so I didn't try.
I'm guessing, with a little motivation and route finding effort, it would not be hard to scramble up past where I quit. Then the ridge we want to get to is downhill on the other side. Unverified.
Here's a view I found from somewhere near Gem Lake. I labeled my guesses.
I haven't been around Snoq Pass in years, I might just go find out for myself soon. Thanks again for the stoke.
